How Auto-Renew Works for Your Domain

This article explains how domain auto-renewal works, when you’re charged, and what to expect if a renewal fails.

Updated over 3 weeks ago

What is Auto-Renew and why is it important?

Auto-Renew is a feature that automatically renews your domain before it expires, so you don’t lose it. It helps keep your website, email, and other services running without interruption, saves you the effort of tracking renewal dates or manually renewing your domain, and helps you avoid penalties or extra fees to recover an expired domain.

Important: When you register or manage a domain with us (or any registrar), you allow us to automatically renew your domain before it expires and charge your saved payment method. This setting stays active until you disable Auto-Renew for your domain. For more details, refer to our article How to Disable Auto-Renew for Your Domain.

How does it work?

When Auto-Renew is enabled, your domain is renewed automatically 32 days before it expires using your saved payment method.

For auto-renewal to work, both of the following must be in place:

We’ll send you two emails before your domain is renewed to let you know it’s scheduled:

  • The first email goes out 45 days before expiry

  • The second email goes out 36 days before expiry

How are the payments handled?

Here’s what you need to know about auto-renewal payments and what happens if they fail:

  • Your saved payment method is used to renew your domain

  • Your domain is renewed for the same term as your previous registration (typically 1 year)

  • The current renewal price is applied, which may differ from your original purchase price

  • If the payment fails, we may retry while your domain is still within the pre-expiry auto-renewal window

  • If the renewal can’t be completed, your domain may expire and eventually be permanently deleted

  • Once the renewal is successful, you’ll see a charge from Name Dot Store Inc on your card

  • Auto-renewal charges are non-refundable once processed. Refunds, credits, or chargebacks cannot be issued, even if:

    • You disable Auto-Renew after your domain is renewed

    • Your domain is transferred or deleted

    • You no longer need or use the domain

How do you disable Auto-Renew?

You can disable Auto-Renew for your domain at any time. For detailed steps, refer to our article How to Disable Auto-Renew for Your Domain.

Note: Once you disable Auto-Renew, you will need to renew your domain manually before it expires. We will not be able to restore your domain if you miss your renewal window.
