How to Add, Edit, and Delete an SRV Record

This article explains how to add, edit, or delete an SRV Record.

Updated over a week ago

An SRV Record (Service Record) directs specific types of traffic, like calls or messages, to the correct server. This record enables your domain to support advanced web services like VoIP, messaging, or other applications.

Follow these steps to add an SRV Record:

1. Log in to your account

2. Find your domain under Your domains and click the Manage button (you can also search for your domain using the Search icon)

3. Click the DNS tab

4. Select DNS Records under the DNS tab

5. Click the Add new record button

6. Select SRV Record in the dropdown

7. Fill in the fields:

a. Service record name: Enter the name of the service and protocol, usually in the format: _service._protocol.example.com (e.g., _chat._tcp.example.com).

b. Priority: Set the order in which servers handle your traffic. Servers with lower numbers get priority and will be used first.

c. Weight: Set the weight for this SRV Record. The weight determines how much traffic is routed to this service when multiple records share the same priority. Higher weights receive more traffic.

d. Port: Enter the port number where the service is running. This ensures traffic is directed to the correct service or application on the server.

e. Target: Enter the hostname of the server that will handle this service. This ensures traffic is directed to the correct service or application on the server.

f. TTL (time to live): Set it to Auto or select a value to decide how long you want DNS information to be stored by servers and browsers. A lower TTL means changes to the record will take effect faster.

8. Click Save

Follow these steps to edit an SRV Record:

4. Select DNS Records under the DNS tab

5. Click the dropdown arrow next to SRV Records and find the record you want to edit

6. Click the edit icon next to the record to make changes

7. Update the fields:

8. Click Save to apply the changes
